Whether you are interested in learning to sail, continuing your sailing education, bareboat chartering, or simply taking a relaxing captained day sail, ECY specializes in working with families to provide outstanding sailing instruction and exciting sailing adventures. We've been sailing with our children, now 12 and 15, on the Gulf Coast for over 10 years now and we know how to make it work!
Our instructors are United States Coast Guard Captains, American Sailing Association certified professionals -- and all are experienced in training families. We will do whatever it takes to accommodate you and your family during your class. We've successfully taught families with toddlers, infants, and teens!
Here at ECY, we are comfortable training different skill levels in the same class. And since we do not pair students up with strangers, it would be just your family and the instructor -- getting your questions answered, using your time to practice the skills that you need to develop, and not focusing on the needs of sailors you will never see or sail with again -- our classes are just for you and who you invite to be on board!
Our classes include practical time on the water, sailing knowledge and nomenclature, navigation (charting and on water skills), knots, and working together. Over the years, we have been delighted by young kids scoring higher on written tests then their parents, watching women take the helm and hold the course better then anyone else in their family, and then watching the families grow and kids grow up each year as they come back to cruise.
Cruising sailboats are family comfortable & family ready... feel at home on the water! Kids love the little nooks and secret hiding spots on sailing vessels. And since your bedrooms, kitchen, and bathroom sail along with you, it is easy to keep your routine, as need be, for naps and meals, as you sail between destinations. Your family can move about the vessel while it is underway, or you can lash in a car seat or booster seat for the very young ones. Playing games, doing simple crafts, reading books, listening to music, even watching movies on a laptop or DVD player all make for great family time together.
Planning your cruise together is fun and educational -- with GPS and voice navigation in cars and phones, who looks at maps anymore? Kids are missing out on important skills and learning spatial relationships -- looking at charts, picking your spots, and drawing out your float plan with grade school kids is not only a part of the adventure, it helps them develop skills that they may be missing.
Families enjoy raising sails together, taking turns at the helm, dropping anchor, running the dinghy to the beach -- sailing is about the journey as much as the destination. Talk, listen to music, cook together, watch for dolphins, snorkel and discover the world under the surface... Working together builds trust and confidence in each other and memories that will last a life time.
Your Captain will also be an ASA certified sailing instructor. Not only can you explore the sound, the bay, and possibly the Gulf, your Captain can provide a mini-lesson for those with an interest in sailing.
